What Are Lions

Lions are men and women dedicated to serving those in need, whether in their community or around the world. They are members of clubs organized in an international organization. In addition to humanitarian service, they enjoy fellowship and develop leadership capacity.

What Is “Lionism”

Lionism is the practice of taking an active interest and/or involvement in the civic, cultural, social, ethical, financial, and moral welfare of the community without receiving or expecting monetary reward.

A History Of Service

The Middletown, MD Lions Club is part of the International Association of Lions Clubs, or simply Lions Club International. Lions Club International began as the dream of a Chicago businessman, Melvin Jones. In 1917, the “Association of Lions Clubs” was formed in Chicago. Today, the International Association of Lions Clubs is the largest service organization in the world with over 1.5 million members in 180 countries. Each Lions Club's primary goal is service, first to its own community, and then to those in need anywhere in the world.

Middletown Lions Club was chartered on March 16, 1931, sponsored by the Frederick Lions Club. The Middletown Lions Club strives to meet the needs of the Middletown community, and offer an opportunity for membership to service-minded men and women.

Making A Difference Today

To enhance its role in international understanding, Lions Club International sponsors an International Peace Poster Contest. Each year at a ceremony at the United Nations in New York, NY an award is presented to the grand prizewinner. Middletown contestants have done exceptionally well, with one student placing in the top 30 out of approximately 45, 000 clubs internationally.

Middletown Lions Club provides support to Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, scholarships for Middletown High School students, Middletown Volunteer Fire Company, Middletown Food Bank, eye care for the needy, school supplies for Middletown Elementary School, Senior Citizen activities, and needy family assistance.

Other service projects at the local level include: coordinating the annual Middletown Halloween Parade and party for community youth, Breakfast with Santa Clause, Christmas Gifts for Kids, the American heritage Essay Contest, and as mentioned above, the International Peace Poster Contest.

At the regional and national level, the Club supports the Maryland Eye Bank, Lions Vision Research, Leader Dog program, and the Lions Club International Foundation.

A conservative estimate is that over 300,000 hours of service has been given to the local community by the Middletown Lions over the last 73 years.

Ready for Tomorrow

In order to better serve our community, we continue to need help from other men and women within the Middletown area who share the same humanitarian instincts for improving life for the less fortunate. Age is not a barrier to a man or woman who wants to become part of our great Association; indeed, WE SERVE BETTER - TOGETHER, and this includes men and women of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. The one common denominator we share is the same high quality of spirit, which leads us to become Lions.
